Internet Security Risks

Internet is a vast place where anything is possible, people turn to internet to earn money, meet a friend or watch a movie. Most of the teenagers are there just for socializing, but even then there are some security risks. Unfortunately even though teens these days know much more about internet than generations 5 days ago did, they are still not taking the internet security risks quite serious and problems seem to pop up one after another.

identity theft

According to the US government over 60% of frauds is committed using internet. So people have gone from every day scams to internet scams in a very short time, internet is currently a necessary place and that is why it poses security risks. What are the most common internet frauds? 45% of all internet frauds are internet auctions, 19% are undelivered merchandise, 5% are check frauds and credit card frauds, identity theft and confidence fraud along with 7 other types of fraud take the remaining 31%.

Three of the currently most popular internet schemes are work at home schemes, identity theft and auction schemes. Auction schemes promise some amazing brands at unbelievably low starting price, something like an expensive watch is a common thing, the winner of the bid is unfortunate to find out when he receives the item that it is either a forgery, something else or he might not even receive anything. Work at home schemes are similar, they  promise a materials and information for maybe $50 to $100 with promises of earning thousands from your home, of course money you gave is lost and you received nothing in return.

Currently the most popular type of internet fraud and the most dangerous one is identity theft. People that obtain your private data like social security number or home address and other personal data can do various illegal things with that information. Anything from applying for a car loan to getting a credit card could be possible, not to mention that once that happens you will be the one in trouble since your data was used to make those claims.

Internet is a vast place where people must be careful; one wrong step can mean a lot of trouble for all of us. Unfortunately teenagers don’t seem to realize the importance of keeping information private. They post their private data on various social sites and give out their important passwords though MSN and Skype. Teenager need to be taught how to use internet with caution, they need to learn how to be cyber smart. Being so called cyber smart is the only way to avoid getting scammed and ripped off like many people are getting ripped of due to Black Hat SEO traps. That involves spending some time on getting to know the internet and all the problem issues you might run into and how to deal with them. There are plenty of government websites that offer some kind of tutorial on internet safety, but there are numerous other websites that concentrate sole on teaching teens and children and even grown men how to use internet in a smart way so they wouldn’t be burned by scammers.

Teen Date Rape, Rising Problem

People are aware of rape as a rising problem in today’s society, and most people think that walking down the dark alley at night might get you in a position where some maniac will jump out of the shadows and try to rape you. Unfortunately the sad truth is that the biggest percentage of rapes occurring is known as date rape. There is no discrimination when it comes to date rape, both men and women suffer and get raped. Date rape or any form of rape is not about love, it never was, rape is an act of violence and nothing more.

When it comes to teenagers most date rapes occur out of confusion from one side. And unfortunately sometimes victims of date rape and dating violence tend to keep quiet about it. That is the part when parents and friends must step in and show support. Although a raped person might not want to talk about it, such a trauma always leaves signs and changes in behavior. Closely monitoring your teenage child or your friend you will be able to notice changes and eventually help your child. This first and the biggest responsibility of any parent is awareness.

The signs you should be watching for are physical signs of injury, falling grades, changes in personality and mood swings, use of various illegal substances, and the most common sign is isolation from society. If two or more of these signs appear you should take a closer look into what has happened with your teen child. The sad truth is that most teens who have been a victim of date rape get in their heads that it was their fault, and that causes more trauma for them than the actual violence they suffered. Emotional scars can be the biggest problem a victim of date rape can suffer.

Even those kids that know the responsibility of dating and everything that goes with it get raped. Most people nowadays can get a hold of date rape drugs, making their victim powerless to defend themselves. Date rape drugs are hard to detect, most of them have no smell, no taste and no color, so they can be placed in a drink and no one will notice. They can put a person in a confused state, or even make a person pass out, some of them will leave your memory blank and you won’t even remember that you were raped. The most common known date rape drug is Rohypnol.

Teen date rape and dating violence is on the rise, every third teenager has been a subject of some form of violence. More than 60% of rapes are in fact date rapes, when a person raped knows the rapist as a friend, boyfriend or even a relative. It is very important for teenagers that have gone through this kind of ordeal to talk about it and get help and it is important for parents and friends to be forthcoming and understanding in those situations. Like we stated before, the biggest and the most important responsibility of a parent is awareness. You need to be aware that teen date rape is happening to more and more teenagers, sad and unfortunate truth, but being aware you might be able to prevent it from happening.

Teen Technology Addiction

In the past decade technology has developed considerably, now every kid has a cell phone and every teenager has a computer. We must admit that in this day and age having a cell phone and a computer is necessary, but is there a chance of misuse of this technology or is it affecting our children in a negative manner? Unfortunately the answer is yes, overuse of cell phones and computers can have negative effects on our children.

teen cell phone

Today’s news all talk about tech abuse by teenagers, or is it other way around. The newspaper headlines are filled with phrases like cell phone junkie and video game addiction. Are those things real, according to some institutions and some states that is true. In fact some states have banned the use of cell phones in schools because according to the newest research children are getting distracted in numerous ways by their cell phone. That is not all, 40% of children ages 11 to 18 admitted that text messages have diminished their knowledge of English language. Their spelling is down, because they are used to typing short text messages and using internet slang like “LOL” or “BRB”.

The other thing is video game addiction, children playing too much games, and it doesn’t matter what kind of games they play, have been known to become antisocial. They distance themselves and there is a high chance of going into a fantasy, an online game can turn a kid from docile and passive to an aggressive state. This is something that should be limited from start, nobody can forbid the children from playing games, but the games they play and the amount of time they spend playing must be monitored.

There are all types of technology addiction; internet is the number one addiction of all. Children that are passive in school develop a totally different personality over the internet talking to someone over the net. That can affect a child in many ways; the first one is becoming antisocial in real life, distancing himself from others, friends and family included. Child that uses internet must be monitored; there is always a great risk of identity theft. Children at a younger age don’t realize the importance of keeping private information private.

This is something that may cause trouble for children in the future as they grow up. Everyone must admit that the technology is the future and our children must be in touch with it, but there need to be some boundaries. None of us wants our children walking like zombies only communicating with each other from safety of their home stuck to a computer.
