Are Teenagers Safe?

No matter what age we live in or what the year is parents are always concerned about their children’s safety. Unfortunately we live in an age where they really need to be concerned.  Teen safety is a well known issue in the past few decades, but now more than ever. There is always the issue of school bullying, gang involvement, substance abuse and the biggest problem in the US, driving accidents. The biggest safety issue in the US currently is teen drivers, most of them are inexperienced and they cause the largest number of accidents and fatalities on the road. So the question is not are teenagers safe, the question is how can we make them safer?

teen safety
For parents that is the most important issue, so how do we really do that? Well the answer is the same as it was always, love, commitment, care, awareness and education. Sounds too much? It isn’t all of those things come together in one package for every loving parent. The basic thing we need to do is educate ourselves and our teenage children about the issues and aspects of their, of teen safety. The first thing is to educate ourselves so we can keep an eye for our children.  The best thing would be to use some of informative websites that provide free teen safety information.

There are numerous sites, some offer specific instructions for safety measures for one single thing like, teen drivers, teen gang involvement or teen workers safety. Most of these sites provide detailed information and even contact numbers for troubled teens and on scene help. But every one of these sites will tell you one thing, the best form of teen safety is prevention and prevention can’t be achieved without education. So go online and start reading, educate yourself for your children’s safety. Once you are educated you may become aware and once you are aware you can protect your child.
Of course that is just 50% of the work, but that is the first 50% where everything starts. Once you know what to do it is up to you and the school where your child goes to educate that child and to make sure he or she is protected and knows the safety issues around him. So the next step would be to make your teen child aware also.
It is not hard, like we said in the beginning all that is needed is love, commitment, care, awareness and education. I’m sure every loving parent has more than enough to make sure his teen children are safe, teen safety is a great issue.

Sad Truth about Teens with Learning Disability

Learning disabilities are a big problem for our youth and not just for them, but also for the entire nation and our economy. Over 10 million teens have some form of learning disability, which is something that can develop into a bigger problem if not solved early. Plus, a learning disability does not only affects a teenager and his grades at school; it can also lead to an increasing number of substance abuse, criminal behavior, joblessness and several other society issues. In the end that costs money all of us, but we need to give money in order to save money and to help those children. An average education cost per year for a child with learning disability is $10,000. That is much smaller than what an adult with learning disability costs the state.

learning

The sad truth about teens with learning disability is that 80% of them have trouble reading and 35% of those teens never finish high school. And that is just the start of the problems, more than 60% of teens with learning disability can’t find a job a year after they finish high school, over 25% of those kids don’t have the necessary knowledge to find a normal job. The two biggest problems in our society of getting a job are substance abuse and learning disabilities, sadly but those two are often related.

The first thing that happens with teens with learning disability is substance abuse; more than 60% of kids with learning disability are using some form of drugs. Over 50% of juvenile delinquents have learning disability. In fact 31% of kids with learning disability that do finish high school are arrested in the first 3 years. So the sad and unfortunate truth is that we have a big problem with teenage children that have some form of learning disability. They need help, and to appeal on those that think that will cost more it won’t. For a teenager with learning disability one school year costs $10,000, but for a person that ended up in jail, a year costs over $30,000, not to mention other expenses and there are many. It is better for them and for us to help them and deal with that issue while the time is right.

The fact is that if these kids are helped on time, while they are still young and they are given to proper facilities that can help them, over 70% of those kids will find a steady and a solid job in the first two years after finishing high school. The remaining 30% have a smaller chance of finding a job, but less than 5% of those will have a problem with the law.

Self-Harming – Another Form of Teen Expression

If we look at the statistics over 1% of the overall population has at one point in their lives inflicted a self-harming wound.  If we look at the teenage population that percentage is more than 3%, so basically 1 out of 30 teenagers has committed an act of self-harming. People that are finding this confusing, scary or even think it’s stupid should continue reading, because this is just a way of teenagers to cope with their emotional problems and there is nothing to be frightened about.

self harm
Many people have different ways of dealing with their problems, some keep to themselves, some cry on their friends shoulder, some turn to isolation and lose themselves in some hobby while other may turn to violence and some of them might even turn to self-harming. Teenager self-harming has become more and more common and that is nothing to be scared about, which is just a way of the teenager to deal with some emotional problems and also a way to let the world around him know in some cases. Most of the teenagers and people that inflict self-harming wounds will never let anyone see those wounds. They keep to themselves and those wounds are their own way of coping with certain problems and emotions, while on the other hand there are a small percentage of people that will actually, when the act is done, show their wounds with guilt.
Self-harm can include many things and in some cases the act of self-harm or self-injury can be a very heavy and difficult injury. While in most cases self-harming consists of picking the skin, scratching, and even burning the skin, sometimes it may go to swallowing sharp objects or deliberate falling from high places or during extreme sports to some other dangerous situations. People around such a person need to be aware that if no help is provided that person might separate him/herself even more from reality and eventually go to more heavier forms of violence and even suicide. The first step is realizing the problem your friend or family member has; the next step is helping him/her in a passive manner.
I said passive manner, which is because people who are prone to self-harming might get agitated and feel pushed and pressured and most people that will inflict self-injuries are not too fond of pressure and tend to bend under it. The best course of action is to let that person know you are aware of the situation and you are willing to talk and help if needed, but never should you push and insist. Unfortunately the beginning is the hardest, this type of person is easy to break down, so all you can do in the beginning is give them support and remind them that you are always there, eventually they will have to open up to you. There are numerous institutions that may help you deal with self-harm, but the fact is that the person that inflicts self-injuries must want to go. If he or she is taken to those institutions against their own will that may cause unwanted consequences and eventually end up in a bad way. Remember, warm words and a big smile can sometimes go a long way.

Teen Gang Involvement And Violence

Gangs and gang violence in the United States is on the rise, and one other thing that is on the rise is the number of teens joining gangs. According to the latest statistics, there are almost a million teenage gang members in the US in over 25,000 gangs. Those are some scary numbers, really scary numbers. So why do kids, teens go to those gangs? Most of the kids join the gang at the age of 12 to 14, and 1 out of 4 members of aging is a teenager, so what is it that makes them join a gang?

gangs

Teen gang involvement and violence can come from many things, first violence comes with gangs, but where does gang involvement come from? There are multiple reasons for teens to join a gang, the first and foremost is to be protected and to belong somewhere. Other teens do it for the chance of making money; some just seek trouble as a thrill. The important fact is that most of these kids chose to belong to a gang on their own, nobody is forcing them. Majority of kids that are in a gang could refuse their gang involvement, but they didn’t.

What parents need to realize that gangs and violence go hand to hand, so once a teenager joins a gang he is 60 times more likely to be a victim of a homicide than an average citizen. The biggest problems with gangs are that some of them take refuge in schools and they use schools to recruit their new members. So you might not live in a dangerous neighborhood, but gangs can still come to your child.

There are a few signs of gang involvement that parents can look out for. The first thing you will notice as a parent is that your child changes friends, after that the most likely thing to happen is the change of wardrobe and dressing habits. Gang members tend to wear recognizable colors, so if your child is always wearing the same color combination that could be one of the general signs of gang involvement. But you need to be careful with that one, that just might be is or hers new favorite combo that is not gang related. But combined with scribbles of gang symbols on books, clothing, maybe even a tattoo is a sign that something is happening. If your child is spending more than you gave him that is also a bad sign, combined with a weapon and losing interest in school and other important things are all signs of problems and changes, mostly for the worst.

There are other signs, more obvious unfortunately, and they are the ones you don’t wish to see, because that is the period when it’s almost too late. Fortunately the key word is almost, because it is never too late to help your child. But if your child gets arrested or starts using drugs and alcohol, you will have a much harder time dealing with the situation. Noticing the signs and looking after your child is the first step to overcoming any problem. There are several institutions and boarding schools that help teenagers and their families in similar situations, don’t be afraid to help your child.
